How To Prevent Bleach Spots

​What to do when you get bleach on your carpet.

Accidently sprayed or spilled some bleach or cleaning solution that contains bleach on your carpet?

Bleach will act quickly to discolor your carpet. Usually, when you get bleach on your carpet, it will likely spot your carpet. Although some carpets are more susceptible to the bleach spots than others, there's not much you can do to prevent it from spotting.

But you can prevent the spot from spreading and creating an even larger bleach spot.

Follow these methods to try to prevent bleach spots from spreading:

​Carpet Bleach Spot Method #1

1. As soon as bleach gets on your carpet, blot the spot with a paper towel. Be sure not to scrub or rub the spot as it could spread and worsen the stain.
2. Mix about a 1/4 teaspoon of mild dish soap with warm water.
3. Pour the mixture over the bleach stain and let it set for 5 minutes.
4. Use a cloth or sponge to rub the stain from the outside in to prevent the stain from spreading.
5. Rinse the solution and spot with some cold water and dry.

​Carpet Bleach Spot Method #2

1. Mix 4 cups of warm water with about 4 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar.
2. Pour the mixture over the bleach stain and let it sit and soak for 5 minutes.
3. Rub the stain with a cloth or a sponge.
4. This should help with the appearance of the bleach stain. Repeat these steps if need be.
5. Rinse the area with cold water and dry.

The vinegar smell will eventually go away. Wash, rinse and dry the area with mild dish soap and warm water to help with this.

Although these methods are not guaranteed to prevent or get rid of bleach spots, it can control and limit the area and appearance of the bleach stain.
